Field Trip Tomorrow!

Our field trip to the Life and Science Museum is tomorrow, 12/19! We are so excited to share our #WeAreCarroll pride and learn some fun new things.

A few reminders:
-please make sure you have turned in permission slips and money for the trip
-if anyone would like to make a donation beyond the $19, it would be very appreciated
-wear your tie-dye shirt to school--our colors are pink, blue and purple
-pack a bag lunch as we will not be able to buy food at the museum

We will leave promptly at 9:30 and return to Carroll by 1:30. The school day will end as usual at 2:15.

Field Trip Permission Slips

Signed forms for our field trip to the Life and Science Museum were due today and we've only gotten about a quarter of them back.

These forms need to be signed and turned in if you want your child to go on the field trip. Please get them in as soon as possible, as we are just about a month away from the trip itself.

On a personal note, I've been to this museum many times and I'm still so excited to go! This is a really cool opportunity for our students, so please make sure to send your signed forms back in.

Thanks,
Ms. Uzzell

Field Trip to the Life and Science Museum

We are excited to prepare for our first field trip on December 19th! Permission slips have been sent home and we need signed forms back by November 13th.

Money is not due until December 1st. Please see cover letter for explicit details on cost of field trip, and don't hesitate to reach out to one of us if the cost is an issue. We don't want anything to get in the way of this enriching experience for our students.

If you would like to volunteer as a chaperone, visit bit.ly/cmmschaperone

Thank you!

TLT Reading Guide

I posted this on my Classroom as well, but for the sake of clarity, here is the reading guide for what we have read so far in The Lightning Thief:

The Lightning Thief Reading Guide

It is crucial that students are reading at home and completing the purpose for reading. We are using the book to practice skills like making inferences and citing text evidence, and students put themselves at a disadvantage by not completing the homework. I will continue to add to this reading guide as chapters are added for homework.

Again, read with your child, or use the very adequate audiobook.

Math Tutoring

Math tutoring has started!!
Tutoring is offered on Mondays from 2:30-5:00 in Ms. Junius room (7th grade teacher). Students can either get a ride home or take the activity bus (It only stops at certain stops. Check with student services to see where the bus stops). See me with questions. Ms. Goodman

6th Grade Supplies

The infamous supplies video! We're seeing students carrying a lot in between classes, so we'd like to help them consolidate. A 3-ring binder with paper and a few folders is all they need. Everything else stays in individual rooms.

Google Classroom

I created a Google Classroom for reading enrichment. Once your student joins, I can add guardians. Please send me an email if you'd like to be added to this Classroom :)

Latino Night and Dinner on the Lawn/Open House

Latino Night, a special presentation for our Spanish-speaking families, will be this Monday night from 5-7 in the library.

Dinner on the Lawn is this Wednesday starting at 5. We have asked student leaders who are volunteering in our classrooms to arrive at 4:45.

Open House begins at 6. This provides parents an opportunity to walk their student's schedule and get an idea of what a "typical" day at Carroll is like. We can't wait to meet you all!

EL Homework and Test

Students have been at slightly different places in reading "The Hero's Journey" and The Lightning Thief this week, but by class on Tuesday, everyone should be read through Chapter 6 of TLT and finished pages 1-27 of their workbooks (most of this was done in class).

The summative assessment for Unit 1 on making inferences and citing text evidence will be this coming Thursday. This is an open book test, and will focus entirely on the writing we have done in class.

EL Homework

Today in Expeditionary Learning (EL), we read and annotated "The Hero's Journey." We are continuing to practice the important skills of getting the gist of excerpts and pulling out supporting details from the text.

Students read from pages 17-20 of their workbooks, and need to complete the chart on page 21.

This was started in class, but will need to be finished for homework so we can start looking at how Percy, our protagonist in The Lightning Thief, aligns with the Hero's Journey!

Percy Jackson Audiobook

Reading aloud with your child is a great strategy for promoting fluency. Another comprehension and fluency strategy is reading along with an audiobook. We are at the phase of reading The Lightning Thief where most of the first draft reading happens at home. Consider letting your student read along with this or another recording of the audiobook (from Youtube).

We have currently read through Chapter 4 and just took the first assessment!

Official Team Name

We'd like to "re-welcome" you to our team - Team Fierce!!  After discussing what our students expect of themselves, what they want to be known for when others hear they are Carroll Cougars, and qualities that cougars in the wild possess, a vote was taken.  Our students chose "fierce" by a large majority and the name has officially been approved!

So, we're excited to officially welcome you to Team Fierce!!

Expeditionary Learning (EL)

All students in sixth grade have received EL workbooks and copies of The Lightning Thief (first book in the Percy Jackson series). We have been reading these books and completing exercises in the workbook during Writing and EL time. At this point, students should be taking books home to read chapters for homework.

There will be a mid-unit assessment this Thursday on the first four chapters of TLT. Students have been discussing the book in class, but it is so important for them to read at home as well.

By Thursday, students need to read through Chapter 4 of The Lightning Thief.
